Ceramic tiles are made from clay. They are the most commonly used tile material indoors but they can also be used outdoors as well. However, if they are to be used outside they need to have a high PEI wear rating. This is a rating of hardness and durability made by the Porcelain Enamel Institute. The PEI rating can be anywhere from 1 through 5. 1 being the most fragile and likely to chip, and 5 being the most durable and used in commercial projects such as shopping malls. For outdoor use, you should choose a tile with a rating of 4 or 5.
These tiles have a PEI rating of 4.
Water absorption is the weight of water absorbed as a percentage tile's weight. Most glazed tile is fired to give an absorbtion rate of less than or equal to 3%, which places them in a frost-proof category.
These tiles have an absorbtion rate of 3. But, DalTile claims these tiles are not frost proof. The 3 rating is at the limit. A higher numerical rating tile would be damaged by the freeze-thaw cycle resulting in cracked tile.
Coefficient of Friction or C.O.F. value is the tile's natural resistance to slip, measured by the force required to move an object acrss the tile divided by its weight. Standard residential applications recommend a C.O.F. greater than .50. ADA guidelines require C.O.F. of greater than .60.
These tiles have a C.O.F. rating of .50.
